Diezani fumbles before senate committee

The Committee Chairman told the Petroleum Minister to return when she is better prepared to answer questions posed to her

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Tuesday in Abuja requested a closed-door session with the Senate to discuss issues concerning the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) in detail.

Alison-Madueke, who made the request at an interactive session with the Senator Emmanuel Paulker-led Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), said that the issue was too sensitive to be discussed in public.

Poll shows that Nigerians oppose fuel subsidy removal

46% of respondents believe Nigerians will protest the subsidy removal through public demonstrations and strikes

For months, the Federal Government has been canvassing for the removal of the fuel subsidy, with President Goodluck Jonathan saying that the country would collapse if government continued to support the subsidy.

In 2011 for instance, N240 billion was budgeted for fuel subsidy, however, the Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke revealed that N1.3trillion had been spent on subsidy during the year. 

According to the President, money realised from the subsidy can be channelled into infrastructural development.

Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Tuesday forced a reschedule of the Senate’s investigation into the management of the oil subsidy, after repeatedly dodging questions from a Senate joint committee at a meeting that lasted more than two hours.

 Alison-Madueke answered no question conclusively- a movenoted by the lawmakers- on details of how government subsidies on fuel products have been managed for years.
