New York prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss sexual assault charges against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Monday, a stunning reversal that could revive the political future of a man many had seen as the next president of France.

Prosecutors gave up hope they could convict Strauss-Kahn after losing faith in their star witness, Nafissatou Diallo, 32, a hotel maid from Guinea who alleged that Strauss-Kahn emerged naked from the bathroom of his luxury suite on May 14 and forced her to perform oral sex.

NJC to meet on Thursday and may recommend Salami’s dismissal after refusing service of Salami’s court papers.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) is set to meet on Thursday in Abuja to debate sanctions for the President of the Court Of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami, following his refusal to obey its directive to tender apologies to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu and the Council over the false accusations he made against CJN.

A unanimous decision by the 109 senators ensures that the senate president retains his seat

David Mark on Monday re-emerged as the Senate President of the 7th Senate of the federation.

His return as the Senate President followed a motion moved by Sen. Ndoma Egba and seconded by Sen. Smart Adeyemi.

Mark became unanimous candidate without opposition from 109 senators and as such there was no election to return him.

He was sworn in immediately by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa.

Mr Tambuwal was elected by a simple majority vote of 252 members on Monday amidst cheers during the inauguration of the seventh session of the House of Representatives.

Members of the House of Representative today defied the wishes of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to elect Aminu Tambuwal as its speaker.

Mr Tambuwal was elected by a simple majority vote of 252 members on Monday amidst cheers during the inauguration of the seventh session of the House of Representatives.

His election brought an end to a long draw battle for the position occasioned by a controversial zoning of the Speakership to Nigeria’s South West by the PDP.

Ndume said that decision of the House to adopt the recommendation of the committee which increased members’ quarterly allowances from N27 million to N42million last year was responsible for the indebtedness of the Speaker.

Former minority leader of the House of Representatives, Senator-elect Alhaji Mohammed Ali Ndume, has indicted the Clerk of the House, Sani Omolori, and the 37-man ad-hoc committee set up to review the allowances of the members of the House over the N10 billion debt incurred by Dimeji Bankole, Speaker of the House.

The management of State and National Assemblies in Abuja have started preparations to induct new members in June.

This is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of two-day, 8th Meeting of Clerks of the both houses in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee and Clerk of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Shehu Randali, said each state legislature would organise the induction for their members-elect.
