Hoopers begins title defence against Police Baton

Other basketball teams vow to wrestle the title from the Port Harcourt-based team

Defending champions of the DStv Premier Basketball League, Royal Hoopers of Port-Harcourt, will this weekend begin their title defense against youthful side, Police Baton of Lagos.

The Chief Coach for Hoopers, Ogoh Odaudu, expressed optimism that his team will successfully defend the basketball league title they won last season.

Odaudu told Daily Times that his team has already been beefed up with new recruits to face the challenges of the new season and have also had an intensive pre-season training that will stand them out in the 2011/12 basketball season, starting this weekend.

He explained that his players were determined and had vowed not to only successfully defend the League title, but also win a continental tournament this year.

“I must say that my players are in top shape. We are going to work hard to ensure that we emerge victorious in all our competitions this year in order to make Rivers State and Nigeria proud”, Odaudu said.

Meanwhile the other teams in the league have also been talking tough as they have vowed to wrestle the league crown away from Royal Hoopers.

Coach Adeka Daudu of Dodan Warriors says his team is not ready to play second fiddle this season as they have set a target of finishing tops for themselves.

Also the coaches of Union Bank and Kano pillars, amongst others, have all also vowed to give Hoopers a run for their money.
